Making Music

12th Nov 2018

In Year 5, we have been listening to and inventing our own rhythmic patterns.  In our last session, we listened to a track named “Unsquare Dance”. This was composed by Dave Brubeck, who experimented with blending African rhythms with jazz.  The rhythm was very tricky because it had 7 beats, not the usual 3 or 4.

We composed our own seven beat rhythms with two different percussion sounds. We decided which percussion sounds would be used by drawing squares or circles round the beats of our composition.

Have a look at some of our plans.  Maybe you could listen to and play your own “unsquare rythms” at home.
