Area Experts in Y7!

28th Jan 2026
This week in Y7, we have been studying the concept of area. Although we know how to calculate area, we were finding it a challenge to describe or represent what a square metre actually is. We decided to experiment with what we already knew. We built a square metre using scrap paper by carefully measuring a square with 1m long sides. We then used this as a guide as we estimated the area of different locations around our school. The more we practised, the more accurate our estimations became. We used our formula, and apparatus such as a metre stick and a trundle wheel, to compare our estimates to the exact area.
